Fragile

Is global warming real? Do you see the connection? - Nele Azevedo's poignant and eye opening installations in Chile, Berlin, Florence -

Underneath that, I feel doubly affected by the melting ice people, just because they seem like real beings, moving, melting, vulnerable, fragile - reminds me of dying creatures, like the gigantic, elegant elephants falling to their knees when shot by poachers, and how quickly really, our realities can fall apart and end.

Bears Bear Bearing

consumed with Bears today. must have dreamt something..
Sartola Ban, artist
marbleheadllc.com

from dogandogs.com

all these pictures of real people with real bears make me cringe of course and am liebsten I would turn the tables on the situation. but it is what it is. for more depressing pics look up gypsies, russians, circus animals and so on in relationship to bears. people make a living. sometimes only on the backs of their bears. I get it but it makes me sad

and from the Germans

our Bulgarian friends
Russia
Blogger Dumneazu writing about the end of the Dancing Bear culture in Romania, Bulgaria and elsewhere in the Balkans and wonders what happens to the families that rely on the money made from the spectacle. In another article the EU people rejoice over saving bears from a certainly horrible fate (graphic) and at the same time contribute to the homogenization of cultures. What is right and wrong? Hmmmm

The Horned Girl & Other Bedtime Stories

These pictures stir fleeting memories in various stages of my childhood - and  deeply, so that I am suddenly floating in someone's bed - maybe between Baka and Dedo, they are reading the Bible and I am looking at the pictures in my Grimm Fairy Tales book, snuggled or stuck in the middle of the warmth.  Baka is clucking, not so silently, one blue eye on the grimly lit strangely arousing illustrations while her finger follows the path of the psalms. I am five.

And, in love always with the maiden and the Bull Headed man..stories of the deep forest and the patiently waiting white horse....tricky territory in an adolescent girls mind. I am lounging in the small patch of grass by the pool, below the concrete balcony under the sleepy gaze of the maids' eyes. Maybe I'm eleven.

The horned girl reminds me of my Girl in the future. The Secret is so strong in them and they are mad for it and protect it at all costs. Beautiful. I maybe thirteen.

Back at four in Baka's kitchen. I'm pretty sure Bakica had a little picture like this taped on the inside of one of her cupboards. Lest she forget to clean, clean, clean...those stains of sin are hard to clean off, Boze sacuvaj, the sins of others against you even harder. "Scrub!" orders that Mean Father Sun.

As I grew up and returned to her kitchen with the ever patient and oppressive cross of Christ the Martyr in the corner I prayed to the moon in spite. Not the Son, not the Sun. That fat cat, always pushing his rays in your face and elsewhere, omnipotent Apollo, pushy motherfucker.

The Moon, instead, soft light & ghostly luminescence, white satin, teletransporter into magic, star studded liberty. Pliable. Willing to fly.

Lone Tree

I think this must be one of the most famous trees in Italy. This is on a slope by the road that leads from San Quirico d'Orcia, the ancient Etruscan village a mile from San Buona Ventura where we are, to Montalcino.

On the way to Montalcino
We became a bit sick from the traveling and stopped into a Farmacia to get some cough drops and were astounded by the frescos that looked like this..

There are a million more places to see, paintings to discover, restaurants to eat in, museums to walk through, beautiful scenes to contemplate. It is not surprising we feel so at ease here. Beauty and grace is so natural here. In the countryside that surrounds us and in the way the women - and men - wear even simple jeans and a t shirt but look stunning. Simplicity and down to earth grumblings are du jour and makes your ears burn and heart laugh as you receive words of wisdom, whether you ask or not - from the local vegetable vendor, the pharmacist and the counter lady at the espresso bar. It's adorable.

Strange Light

In Pisa for the day at the magnificent Cathedrale at Piazza dei Miracoli (unesco hs) we danced around the tourists and the dark feel of the Medieval stone and marveled at the folds and sighs carved into the marbled statues. The black angels with their swords seemed avengers more than protectors and with the inferior light, were impossible to photograph properly.

Then, this beam from the highest windows, Ani captured it with the cel phone...just beautiful

A Gift in Two

At Pirate art gallery yesterday to see Brian Comber's new work on exhibit. Mythological animals, gold orbs, wings and black lines. Also - this

 Lovely as ever.

Ongoing talks between he and M. duPays have resulted in these very precious, rooted and sunny poetry/drawing/painting collaborations.

These touched me deeply my memory sparked by the Dandelions which my dear Grandfather adored. Dandelion salad with white vinegar, oil  and salt in a big bowl. He loved to eat them. This bright and beautiful picture made me very happy.

Another collaboration B Comber P duPays . More roots & vegetables - the heart of many revolutions. @Pirate art gallery on W 36th & Navajo.

Right down the street btw is Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, which features the most beautiful Mother/Madonna as the central figure of the Main altar. Also not something you see everyday.

Pot de Crème & Rosé

At Z Cuisine with the almost teens for a bit of dessert. Pot de crème for them & Rosé for me. Great mother daughter bonding during Spring break. & you know I had to stop at the 'Big Picture' wall and take some quick pics.

The light is so weird on that corner and works beautifully no matter what you do.  I've written about it in other posts and hope you don't tire of the repetition but really, how can you? The huge posters wheat paste smudged onto the west side of the restaurant wall is a project (one of so many!) created by dashing Denver based photographer Mark Sink & has garnered local & international note. Looks, btw, more beautiful with age. Some things do, you know.

....street art combined with organic French deliciousness ...Denver really can be quite fab if you know who and where...

Evocative Pieces

Artist Jill Ricci says in her bio 'I want the pieces to evoke an old wall in Morocco, a Renaissance Church, a NYC subway wall and Malibu Barbie all simultaneously existing on one canvas.' and that is exactly what it evokes in me. Rambling through Pintrest (shhhh, don't tell everyone) I found one of her pieces and was immediately smitten. Below are a couple examples but obviously go to her site and see for yourself. Lovely.
